The life of Joan Emslie nee Hosty

Joan was born in 1937 in Liverpool as the 4th of 10 siblings. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War, Joan and her siblings were forced to evacuate to Burnley in 1940 (when Joan was just 3 years old).  Spending her teenage years in Burnley with her brothers and sisters, who she cared for and looked after deeply, Joan had a vivid imagination when it came to creating new games for them. This was the start of Joan's cooking, baking and cleaning passion, as she would always help her Mam with looking after her siblings, and keeping the home.  The church was always an important part of Joan's life, regularly attending St John's in Padiham where in 1957 she married Jim a Scotsman, having met each other in the Empress Ballroom in Burnley - where they shared a passion for dancing.  Martin, Andrew, Pauline and Peter were born in the following 16 years after they met. Having moved from Padiham to Bury in 1964, some 10 years later Joan trained and became a State Enrolled Nurse. Throughout her nursing career Joan was always caring and compassionate towards her patients and never cut any corners and was awarded the Douglas Medal for Nursing. Joan continued working until she retired aged 67.  Upon settling in Bury, Joan and her family became members of the Guardian Angels church community, where she was an active member of the Union of Catholic Mothers, and various social committees. Joan's faith helped her face many adversities and challenges, particularly in her later life,  Joan was very proud of her family, and loved her 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren deeply.  Joan loved nothing more than a big party, and living life to the full.
