Norman Burns

  • 22.08.1939 - 22.12.2020

Our beloved Dad and Grandad

Norman was born in Manchester on 22nd August 1939. War broke out 10 days later - “The war started because of me” he’d often say. He lived in Cheetham Hill with his mother Nancy. On Christmas Eve 1958 he proposed to Maureen Clegg on the number 50 bus to Stockport. They married on 3rd September 1960 and moved to Bury the following year. Norman and Maureen had four children; Estelle, Neale, Mark and David. Norman worked as a civil engineer and retired from Manchester City Council when he was 53. Maureen died in Preston in 2002. Norman kept himself busy and fit, walking and dancing. Some years later through dancing he met Diane, who he married at home in Bromley Cross in November 2009. Diane died two months later. Norman continued to dance and socialize until the ”lockdowns” of 2020 stopped this. He then put his efforts into his gardens, making his weekly challenge to fill his garden waste bins! Norman went to the doctor (under duress!) with a bad back in November and was admitted to Salford Royal hospital on 8th December. Norman died with his children around him on 22nd December 2020. He was 81 years old. Norman was a much loved father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
